Croft Architects specialise in residential and small-scale commercial and public buildings in the South-East Queensland region. Established in 1994, we are a small, specialised team of design and technical thinkers who strive to create high quality outcomes for our clients with an emphasis on functional, sustainable and delightful projects.
Simply put, we believe good design adds value to our lives.
Our Story
Croft Architects was founded in 1994 by Bob Croft who transitioned from working in large-scale commercial practice to setting up his own practice. Initially, the studio was partially created to help raise a young family at home, but also to establish a platform for Bob’s vision to deliver affordable, well designed, high-value projects specific for the Queensland climate and context. In 2024, Bob’s son Michael Croft, has joined the studio and brings over 14 years of local and international experience in renowned design practices specialising in residential, education, public and commercial buildings.
Over 30 years of practice, the studio has cemented itself as a reliable Brisbane Architectural practice which specialises in new and character residential projects and small scale public and commercial buildings in South East Queensland and Brisbane region. Being a small practice, we can offer complete personal attention to all clients from start to finish.
Our Design Approach
We create buildings that are high-value, cost effective and empathetic to our clients requirements. We also consider the wider potential impacts design can have on our communities, culture and cities.
We specialise in designing within the Queensland vernacular context and Sub-Tropical climate. We know how hot the Queensland sun gets, how invigorating a comfortable, cross ventilated room can feel and how a late afternoon storm can spring out of nowhere.
We believe in a flexible and agile design process that responds to the brief requirements and shifts with the project evolution.
We love the ‘craft’ of building and technology and see the creativity and high-quality outcomes for interrogating the unique crafted potential for each project.
We strive to create sustainable buildings that are resilient for future climatic change and reduce impact to the environment. We work commonly with timber materials that have a lowered carbon footprint compared to other traditional materials of steel and concrete.
In a post-COVID world, we believe design will play a crucial role in making the most of resources in a ever-changing global context and construction industry. This requires interrogation of ‘traditional’ project assumptions and projects that are flexible, adaptable and ‘do more with less’.
