This renovation of an existing townhouse in New Farm focused on increasing the footprint of the ground level spaces, whilst respecting the constraints of the existing townhouse estate development framework. The entire townhouse was refreshed to meet the evolving requirements of the client.

To increase the area of the ground level, the idea of a pavilion in a garden was adopted, maximising glazed openings and operable windows and doors to create a well daylit and naturally ventilated space that overlooked a lush sub-tropical garden.

The roof form of the extension was constrained to align with existing setbacks and datumn of the neighbours roof. To increase daylight into the pavilion, the roof form was ‘lifted’ in the centre creating a high level window and a ‘folded’ ceiling form which reflects the light internally.

A rich, warm palette of Spotted Gum veneer cabinetry, a ‘folded’ Hoop Pine plywood ceiling, Rosewood framed windows and doors and a warm polished concrete floor creates a delightful pavilion experience with the backdrop of a lush garden. A full upgrade of appliances and fixtures throughout the home occured to bring the existing townhouse into a comfortable, modern residence.

A custom designed daybed was proposed adjacent to the garden as a comfortable and versatile furniture piece to rest, read, overlook their garden or store objects to compliment their living space. The backrest was ergonomically designed to follow the natural shape of the spine, and to include a spot to hang bags.

For wet areas, a dark, grotto experience with accented fixtures and timber veneer cabinetry contrasts with the remainder of the home, suitable for the reflection and activity of these utility spaces.
