Description

This project involved exploring concept design options for an alteration and addition to a Character Home in Bardon for our Client. While a beautiful and charming character home, the existing house layout was compromised by the placement of the two internal bedrooms. This created a disconnect and interrupted the flow and openness between the front formal Entry and Lounge zones and the rear Family zone. In each design study, it was important to relocate the internal bedrooms to the exterior walls and to resolve the flow and openness through the house.

In each option we tested how modest changes—shifting a few walls, widening openings, and repositioning doors—could make everyday living easier. The layouts aim to pull more natural light and fresh air into all spaces, improve living space connection to the backyard, and add create a functional and modern home.

Respect and embellishment of the character house was important, to consider working with the existing bones and details to produce a future proofed, contemporary solution.

We also put forward a long term masterplan for the client, if they wished to add a significant extension underneath the raised home, or to the rear of the house.
